Competing Overseas This Northern Winter? Make Sure You’re Ready
Published Fri 16 Oct 2026
With the northern winter approaching, Australian athletes planning to compete in FIS-sanctioned events overseas are reminded to make sure they have completed the necessary requirements before requesting an event entry.
Snow Australia remains the single point of entry for Australian athletes competing internationally in FIS-sanctioned events. Before an athlete can be included on an official Australian FIS entry, there are three key areas that need to be in place: membership and FIS registration, competition insurance and an Expression of Interest (EOI).
Full information, forms and links are available on the Snow Australia Competing Overseas page.
1. Membership and FIS Registration
Athletes must hold a current Snow Australia membership at the appropriate International level (or equivalent) for their discipline, along with a current FIS registration where required.
If you competed domestically or in New Zealand earlier in the season on a different membership level, make sure you check whether an upgrade is required before submitting your overseas entries.
Memberships can be upgraded throughout the season depending on your competition needs.

2. Competition Insurance
All athletes competing in FIS events must have appropriate competition insurance in place.
Under FIS Rule 212.3, competitors must carry accident insurance sufficient to cover accident, transport and rescue costs, including race risks, as well as appropriate third-party liability insurance. Snow Australia, as the National Ski Association submitting the entry, is responsible for ensuring appropriate cover is in place and may require evidence of insurance before an athlete is entered.
Athletes may arrange their own suitable policy, or review the competition and travel insurance information available through Snow Australia. Before purchasing any insurance, athletes should make sure the policy meets both the FIS requirements and their individual travel and competition needs.

3. Submit an Expression of Interest
If you intend to compete in FIS-sanctioned events overseas, you must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) listing the events you would like to be considered for.
Before submitting your EOI, please check the relevant event and discipline eligibility requirements. Snow Australia will review your request, confirm that the required prerequisites have been met and then manage the official entry process with the event organiser.
Please submit your EOI within the published timelines and allow plenty of time before your first event.
Submitting an EOI does not guarantee an event entry. Selection criteria, eligibility requirements and FIS quotas may need to be applied before an entry can be confirmed.

Plan early
Athletes are encouraged to get these requirements sorted well before travelling. Having your membership, FIS registration and insurance in place before submitting your EOI will help Snow Australia process international entries as efficiently as possible.
Coaches and officials supporting Australian athletes overseas should also familiarise themselves with the additional SnowID and Snow Australia Representative Declaration and Code of Conduct requirements that now apply when representing Australian athletes at international FIS events.
