2023 Skills Assessment

About

The Alpine Director in collaboration with the Coach Leadership from each of the Affiliated Clubs have reviewed the delivery and structure of the National Skills Assessment.

The one-day National Skills Assessment has now evolved into an In-Club Development Camp and Skills Assessment delivered within each club, over a number of nominated days throughout the season. This time will be nominated by each of the Affiliated Club and  will be individually designed for each Club.

This In-Club Development Camp and Skills Assessment will allow the Alpine Director and Clubs to;

  • Increase the success of athlete long-term outcomes,
  • Better understand the level of athlete skills and how to better support athlete development,
  • Allow for professional development opportunities for Club Coaches working alongside the Alpine Director,
  • Allowing the Alpine Director to spend quality time with Athletes in their daily training environments,
  • Provide a face-to-face opportunity for parents and club community to discuss any questions with the Alpine Director through age-specific town halls.

This new direction will assist Clubs to better integrate the National Skills Assessment into their daily training environments and design program plans to enable athletes’ quantifiable opportunities to make improvements during the season.

Why is developing Skills so important?

Snow Australia is dedicated to providing aspiring athletes with a comprehensive understanding of their strengths and opportunities for improvement in relation to the key fundamental skills associated with Alpine skiing.

Fundamental movement skills are about the Athlete’s ability to have awareness of their body relative to their environment, to control their movements and to maintain or regain their balance. Possessing a well-rounded repertoire of fundamental movements is a key component to building a successful platform for long-term athlete development, maximising your talent potential, versatility and adaptability and minimising the risk of injury.

The National Alpine Skills Assessment manual outlines the on-snow foundation skills which are vital for athlete development. It is encouraged that athletes and parents read through the National Alpine Skill Assessment manual, and learn and practice these skills daily.
