Sporting Schools applications open for Term 3
Published Fri 28 May 2021
As the weather gets colder and we move into the winter season, it’s great timing to bring snow sports to your school.
Applications are now open to apply for a Sporting Schools Grant to bring Little Shredders and Little Gliders to your primary school.
Snow Australia offers two primary school programs to Sporting Schools participants across Australia’s school yards: Little Shredders and Little Gliders.
Little Shredders is based on the hugely popular Burton Riglet product that provides the opportunity for students to learn the basics of snowsports using custom-made modified equipment, built specifically for use in the school yard. This cutting-edge participation program is focused on introducing students of all ages to snowsports with the aim of developing their knowledge, physical preparedness and confidence to go to the snow and experience Australia’s coolest sport.
Schools can apply for funding to run Little Shredders at their school by hiring the equipment. The program is either delivered by a teacher or, in some locations, by an external coach.
Little Gliders is based on the successful Nordic Rocks program from North America and uses strap-on skis that can be used on snow, carpet, grass or synthetic grass. Activities include introductions to classic and skate skiing, downhill techniques such as tucking and slalom, synchronised skiing and obstacle courses, as well as adapted games such as 1-ski soccer, ‘Pass the Yeti’ and ‘Snowman Frisbee’.
Little Gliders is available to ACT schools only and is delivered by an external coach.
Applications close Friday June 4 for Term 3 Sporting Schools Funding. Details on how to apply can be found on Sport Australia Sporting Schools website.
