Widely regarded as one of Australia's greatest Alpine skiers, Malcom Milne learned to ski at the age of 13 on the slopes of Falls Creek. Following his brother Ross Milne's lead, he became junior national champion at the same time as his older brother held the senior title, just prior to the Innsbruck 1964 Olympic Winter Games. That was a year marked by tragedy as Ross lost his life in a Downhill training accident just a few days before the Opening Ceremony of the Games.

The tragedy gave extra motivation to Malcolm, then 15, who set himself to prove to the world that skiers from countries such as Australia could race at elite international level and on challenging downhill courses.

Malcom was 19 when he was selected into the Australian Olympic team and made his Olympic debut at Grenoble, France, in 1968. He recorded Australia’s best skiing results at Winter Games to that point, placing 24th both in the Downhill and the Slalom - one of the best results in the discipline ever for any Australian male.

At the end of 1969 Milne won Gold in the Val d'Isere FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Downhill, Australia's first Alpine Ski World Cup medal. It was also the first, historical podium by a racer from the southern hemisphere, making Milne the first non-European skier to win a men’s FIS Alpine World Cup Downhill. Two months later he achieved another FIS Alpine Ski World Cup podium finishing third in the Downhill event in Val Gardena, Italy, and then went on to win the Downhill Bronze at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships held in the same Italian resort.

Milne competed in his second Olympic Winter Games at the Sapporo 1972 Olympics. His international success inspired many Australian skiers and  prompted the then named Australia Ski Federation to fund more young hopefuls to compete in Europe and gain the necessary experience to excel at elite level.

A life member of Snow Australia, Malcom Milne was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985. In 2000 he received the Australian Sports Medal for his contribution to skiing.
