Jono Brauer’s family was based in Thredbo during his development years, giving him the opportunity to develop his skills on the mountain as a junior alpine skier.

Brauer’s talent was evident from a young age. He quickly became a regular winner at the Australian National Championships and started competing internationally in North America and Europe at 16 years of age, soon winning two slalom events. By 1999 Brauer was ranked number two in the world in slalom for his age group and was on his way towards his FIS World Cup debut, which took place in Aspen, Colorado (USA) in November 2001.

Brauer enjoyed a successful international career participating in 43 World Cup events, with his best result seen during the 2005-2006 season in Chamonix (France), where he placed 14th in the Super Combined.

Brauer represented Australia twice at the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships in 2003 and 2009. His best result was a 31st place in the Giant Slalom at Val d’Isere, France, in 2009.

He was also selected twice to the Australian Olympic team, competing at the Torino 2006 and Vancouver 2010 Winter Games. He scored his career-best Olympic results in Canada, where he finished 30th in the Super-G and 39th in the Downhill before calling time on his competitive career.

Since retirement, Brauer has coached locally and overseas. Outside of sport he owned several businesses and has also had experience in the media industry, as a member of Channel 7’s commentary team for the alpine events during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
