Snow Australia is pleased to announce the athletes who will represent the green and gold at the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in St. Anton, Austria from 17-26 January, 2023.

Zali Sutton, Phoebe Heaydon and Joey Steggall will compete in the Austrian Alps across the technical events of Slalom and Giant Slalom which start on 21  January.

All three athletes have had a strong start to the 2022/23 season. Heaydon comes into the Junior Worlds off the back of a gold and bronze medal at the recent Aspen FIS event in December, scoring her first sub 40 point results, and with plenty of international experience from Austrian and Italian events so far this year.

Sutton recorded a personal best Slalom result and a bronze medal at the Adelboden FIS event in mid-December. She also won a Slalom silver medal in Livingo at the Italian Junior National Series, before placing fourth in the Italian National Junior Championships.

2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games athlete Steggall has also recorded personal best point performances during the start of the season, with plenty of experience competing across the French Alps.

Snow Australia Alpine Director Shawn Fleming said the high level international competition will provide a perfect opportunity for the athletes to experience the pressures and excitement that comes from a World Championships.

“This is a great opportunity for three of our National Alpine Ski Team athletes to go up against the best in the world for their age,” Fleming said.

“All three of these athletes have had strong starts to their seasons, both Phoebe and Zali scoring personal bests in Slalom and taking some FIS podiums along the way, as well as Joey having personal best results in both his SL and GS results to date.

“My hope for these athletes is that they can use this event as a stepping stone in their ski racing journey - getting used to the hype of a big international event and learning to focus on their performances and executing their game plans.

These athletes have a long future so my hope is that they can each leave with positive learnings to help them progress to the next level,” he said.
