2025 Children’s Championships at Mount Hotham

More than 150 of Australia’s top young alpine skiers converged on Mount Hotham last weekend for the 2025 Children’s Championships, with four days of racing showcasing the next generation of talent in the U14 and U16 categories.
Despite challenging weather conditions that saw the Ski Cross event unable to be held, the Championships delivered a strong program of racing, with athletes demonstrating resilience, adaptability, and determination.
Snow Australia’s Alpine and Ski Cross Director Shawn Fleming highlighted the event as the largest alpine event for the U14 and U16 athletes.
“There were 152 athletes on the start line, which was a really strong showing,” Fleming said.
“Obviously the weather came in and definitely affected the schedules and the ability to run the events as originally planned.
“It was also a good lesson for the kids and families, that as an outdoor sport, these types of things happen all the way through your career, and the most successful ski racers are the ones that are adaptable and able to stay focused while going with the flow.
“Across three Slalom races and one Giant Slalom on quite soft snow, you saw the top kids showing adaptability, adjusting their tactics to the conditions, and still putting down really good runs.
“That’s not easy to do at this age, and it was great to see, and overall it was good competitive racing.
The 2025 Children’s Championships once again reinforced its role as a cornerstone event for Australia’s alpine pathway, giving the nation’s best young skiers a chance to experience high-level competition and develop skills they’ll carry into future racing careers.
