1962 -

Discipline: Alpine Skiing
Olympic Participation: Sarajevo 1984
Medal awarded in: 2020

Ondine McGlashan is yet another product of Mt Buller. Her father was a keen sportsman and encouraged all his children to ski, surf and sail. McGlashan started skiing at the age of five, taught by her parents during their yearly trips to Mt Buller.

McGlashan already was the fastest under-13 girl in Australia when she was selected to her first Australian team and had a chance to travel to Aspen, Colorado (USA) with a large group of promising talents from NSW and Victoria, to train for eight weeks.

Her talent developed quickly under the tutelage of American coach Mike Porter and by 1982 she had achieved selection for the Alpine Ski World Championships held in Schladming, Austria. Her performance immediately caught the attention of the French Ski team and they invited her to train with them.

McGlashan spent three years following the French team and competing for Australia. Notable results in that period include a 5th place in the French Championships and a 7th place in the World University Games, along with multiple Australian national titles in Slalom and Giant Slalom. Most importantly those results earned McGlashan a selection for the Australian Olympic team travelling to Sarajevo for the 1984 Winter Olympics. In 1991 she also participated in Australia’s first Interski in St Anton (Austria).

Once retired from competitive ski racing, McGlashan became a coach. Her most famous athlete is undoubtedly Olympic bronze medallist Zali Steggall, whom McGlashan coached to her first Olympic qualification for Albertville 1992 when she was 16 years old..

McGlashan is the current President of the Ski Club of Australia, an organisation with more than 100 years of history and a seminal force in the development of Australian skiing. She still races in Club and Masters events, grateful that her love of skiing is still strong.
