Thredbo Hosts Park and Pipe ANC

Another spring bluebird day delivered on Thursday at Thredbo, capping off the final Australian stop of the Australia and New Zealand Cup (ANC) before the action crosses the ditch to New Zealand. 

Fresh off Wednesday’s Big Air event at the Stomping Grounds, competitors traversed across the mountain to Anton’s terrain park, where sunshine and blue skies made for the perfect setting to close out the week with Slopestyle.

Olympian Ally Hickman backed up her Big Air result in style, lacing her first run to post a 94.67 and top the podium once again. Twelve-year-old Airish George impressed well beyond her years, showing off her style and variety to score a huge 86.67 for second, the first of what will surely be many FIS Open Age podiums. Olympian Mela Stalker completed the podium closely behind with a 84.33.

Olympian Indra Brown showed her calmness under pressure, following up a modest 63.67 on her first run by stomping what she was after on her second attempt to narrowly snatch first place with a 95.67. Fourteen-year-old Maya Broadbent was the most consistent skier on course, landing two monster runs that both scored in the 90’s. With just 0.34 separating the pair, it made for a thrilling day of skiing. Evie Mohr rounded out the podium with a 62.00 for bronze.

New Zealand’s Zephyr Lovelock returned to Thredbo on a mission after his Big Air silver, getting his run done on his first attempt to post a 95.33. Fifteen-year-old Australian rising star Hayden Jacobs claimed silver with an 81.67, while Juan George kept the family flag flying from sister Airish, showing his own style on course to score a 75.00 and round out the podium in third.

Australia’s Toby Mcilwaine took out the Men’s Ski division with a 91.33, marking his first FIS Open podium after showcasing his technical skiing across both the jump and rail features. New Zealand’s Fergus McArthur pushed closely behind with an 88.33 for second, and fellow Kiwi and Olympian Luke Harrold completed the podium in third.

The Park and Pipe ANC tour continues in New Zealand, with The Remarkables set to host another Slopestyle event from 25-27 September, before the tour wraps up at Cardrona, with Big Air, Slopestyle and Halfpipe from 3-9 October.

Thredbo is playing host to the Australia & New Zealand Cup (ANC) this week, as the previously vacant area of the mountain is transformed into the ‘Stomping Grounds’. For the past few weeks, athletes from around the world travelled to Thredbo to train at the world class facility, where another Big Air jump was built specifically for this week's ANC event.

Big Air kicked off the schedule this week on Wednesday, with Slopestyle set to close out the event on Thursday. 

Spectators packed the top of the Cruiser chairlift to watch under blue spring skies as Australian Olympians, international competitors and the country’s best and up and coming talent went head-to-head for the top of the podium.

Milano Cortina Olympian Ally Hickman took out the top spot in the Women’s snowboard division, stomping a textbook frontside 1080, a trick that is fast becoming a signature move for the young rider, earning her a massive 90.00. Japan’s Yura Murase claimed second with a 75.33, while Australian Olympian Mela Stalker rounded out the podium in third place with a 73.00. 

The Women’s Ski division delivered a strong all-Australian podium. Olympian Indra Brown took the top spot with a 74.33, showing the multi-discipline talent that spans both park and pipe. Rising star Maya Broadbent followed in second with a 70.00, and Matilda Beumont claimed third with a 66.00.

Seventeen-year-old Ben Pearce recorded his best result to date, taking out the top spot in the Men’s Snowboard with an impressive 91.00. New Zealand’s Zephyr Lovelock finished second with an 88.67, and Australia’s James Garth claimed third with a 70.67.

The Men’s Ski division proved the closest battle of the event, with only a few points separating the top three. New Zealand Olympian Luke Harrold, swapping his usual halfpipe skis for slopestyle, posted the biggest score of the day, a 93.67. Australia’s Joey Ellis stomped his first run to secure a 91.00 for second, while Angus Falconer rounded out the podium in third with a 90.00.

The action shifts a little further down the mountain on Thursday, with many of the same competitors returning to battle it out on the Slopestyle course, all chasing crucial points towards an overall ANC title and World Cup spot.
