Falls Creek, Jindabyne host SkiMo events this week

It’s a big week for the new Olympic sport of Ski Mountaineering with “SkiMo/Info/Demo” events held in Falls Creek and Jindabyne.

While conditions mean that Saturday’s SkiMo Sprint event at Falls Creek had to be cancelled, there was still plenty for participants to take part in.

Day one of the SkiMo Development Camp in Falls Creek on Thursday started with Matt Reid, president of Ski Mountaineering Competition Canada, discussing the history of Skimo and began teaching the basics of transition practice.

The afternoon was spent accessing the available snow at Falls Creek where the group was put through their paces in a World Cup transition drill.

Friday’s session involved more uphill-focused training and a simulated sprint race.

The Camp was coordinated by Snow Australia SkiMo Project Coordinator Brian Lichi, while Australian SkiMo World Cup skiers Phil Bellingham and Anna Trnka also attended.

On Saturday, the general public is invited to find out more about all things SkiMo at an information session held a St Falls West Function Room, Falls Creek from 11am-12pm.

Those wishing to attend a session in NSW can get along to the National Snowsports Training Centre in Jindabyne on Monday 25 September where another information session will be held from 4pm.
